Summer Learning Journey Task 2

Arriving In New Zealand, Setting Sail

Image result for map of new zealand
Task - Imagine you were travelling to New Zealand from your home country on a Waka, write a short letter to a friend about your voyage.

Dear Friend,

I write this letter to you as something to remember me by. I wan't you to know that not a day goes past when I don't miss home, but now that I have settled here in New Zealand with my family I don't regret my choice.
The trip here was long and boring, there were beautiful days and there were stormy days, there were fun days when we laughed and sang songs, excited about our new life, there were days when we sat gloomy watching the horizon waiting for the first spec of land to loom out of the sea.
There are funny stories about my brother falling out out of the Waka and once we almost got lost but we are here now.
On the day we first set foot on the land it was sunny and beautiful as I felt the golden sand under my feet I knew I had made the right decision to come to this new land.
I send my best wishes for your new school next year, give your family a big hug from me.

Lots of Love, Your Best Friend

Big Foot Bike Safety Day

Room 4, learning how to Ride

Yesterday (13/11/17) Room 4 participated in the Big Foot bike safety program. Bikes were provided for the whole class and depending on the skill level of each person we were put into groups of 5 - 6 students. Once in our groups we did some drills and fun games to build our confidence in the saddle, we learnt about signalling on the road and looking back at cars without falling off.
After morning tea we got back on our bikes and my group went out on the local bike paths to learn about the rules of the road. We got back to school late for lunch. After lunch we went for a longer bike along different bike paths over the motorway and through the park. I had lots of fun learning new skills on my bike, comment if you ride a bike.

Being Cyber Smart - Solving Scenarios

Solving Scenarios

In our cyber smart lesson today with Mr V we looked at being cyber smart when something happens online. In the video above Wynstan and I are answering a question "if your best friend asks what your password is what do you do?"
Our answer was "we don't tell them because they could use it against us by signing in and pretending to be us"
In the image below I have made up a scenario for you to comment below what you would if you were in this place. I look forward to seeing you answers.

Market Day 2017, How it Went

Market Day, 2017

On Thursday 7th September it was the Wesley Intermediate Market Day. As I explained in a previous post the students of Wesley Intermediate went through the design process to create a product or service to sell at market day to the Wesley community.
The first picture is Michael Woods poising with Te Paea and the artwork he sold at his stall.
My group (Reean, Amber and Me) sold homemade muffins/cupcakes, cheesecakes and candy floss. The cheesecakes and cupcakes sold very well but because we were outside it was very windy and wet and the candy floss machine did not work very well.  So we went inside after a while but the candy floss took too long to make.
Even though we didn't do very well selling candy floss at market day we still had fun and learnt a lot.
Comment your thoughts on what I could do better next time.
Thanks

No 'E' Writing Challenge

Writing Challenge

Rules: Create a sentence about this image without using the letter 'E'

Yesterday we did a writing challenge, we came up with creative ways to write without using the letter 'E' It proved difficult at the start but it got easier when I got the hang of it.
This is my sentence - An alligator can snap at anything as fast as a storm can rip through a dark sky
Try it yourself and put your sentence in the comments.

Wesley Intermediate Market Day

Wesley Intermediate Market Day

Wesley Intermediate are having a Market day in week seven of term three. In the weeks coming up to market day the students are asked to design a product that they will sell on the day. We then create and prototype our product until it meets the design we had in mind.
We sell our products on market day and use the money in any way we want. My group is making candy floss and the we want our profit to go to the NZ breast cancer foundation.

Wesley Intermediate School - Garden Project

Wesley Intermediate School Garden Project

The Wesley Intermediate Environmental Council have been working on plans to get a garden up and running for the school. Recently a few students from the environmental council went to Bunnings Warehouse and picked up some gardening tools and equipment that Bunnings has donated to us.
We are very excited to partner with Bunnings to create a community garden that the school will develop and look after for everyone to use.

How to Create a Good Blog Post - Infographic

Today we learnt about infographic's and then we created one. This is my one on how to create an effective blog post, I hope this advice will help you.

Ports Of Auckland

Ports Of Auckland

On Tuesday 21st March, room 4 went on the Ports Of Auckland trip at the Auckland Waterfront, we learnt all about the Ports Of Auckland and how they operate. I already knew that The Ports of Auckland are used for importing and exporting food and other items of use into/out of New Zealand.
The goods that are imported/exported into/out of Auckland are all stored in big steel containers that are loaded onto container ships that are sent to other countries.
So I knew why the ports of Auckland is there and what it is used for, but during the trip I learnt how it operates. These are some questions that my teacher set for me after the trip.

  1. What is a Maritime Museum?
A Maritime Museum is is a museum that has exhibition's and displays on ships and travel on large amounts of water.
  1. What is a Gantry Crane?
A gantry crane is a type of overhead crane that is stationary so the things it has to lift have to be taken to it.
  1. What is a Plimsoll and what is it for?
The Plimsoll line is a mark on a ship's hull that says the maximum depth that the vessel can safely be immersed when loading cargo.
  1. What are Straddles Carries for?
Straddle Carries are used for taking the containers to the Gantry Crane to be loaded onto the container ships.

Describe a Moment in Time

Describe a Moment in Time

In this slide I used the five senses to describe three different pictures. I enjoyed the challenge and found it fun to make up story's about the same girl at different ages. Next time I want to put more detail in my writing and make them longer.
I hope you enjoy reading my short moment in time descriptions. Leave a comment down below.

The Words We Value

Room 4's Word Cloud
Today room 4 talked about how we want to be treated. We made a word cloud with all of the words that explain how we want to be treated. The bigger the words the more people wrote them. I chose four words from the cloud that mean a lot to me and underneath them I wrote how you can show them.  You can take the concept of these words to action both online and offline.

Get NZ Writing Challenge

Hello,
This year I am a year 8 at Wesley Intermediate School. I will be posting some of my learning progress and goals throughout this year.
We are participating in the Get NZ Writing Challenge. As a class we are filling out a big poster to send down to Northern South land College. This poster contains lots of information about our classroom and the students in Room 4. Each student will help fill our poster with fun facts and info about our classroom. We will receive the same poster from Northern South land College with facts about their class.
I am very excited about exchanging our writing with Northern South land College.
