Summer Learning Journey Task 1

Arriving in New Zealand, The First Settlers

Task - Read this short story about a famous man in Maori Mythology and write three interesting facts you learn't about Maui. What other stories do you know about Maui?

Facts:
1. Maui was no ordinary man, he was gifted and Maori Mythology states that he pulled New Zealand up from the depths of the ocean.
2. Stories about Maui are told in nearly every Polynesian land.
3. Maui appears as a demigod and a primary character in the 2016 Disney film Moana.

Other stories about Maui:

  • How Maui Slowed the Sun
  • How Maui Found his Mother

  1. Hello Rosemary. I really enjoyed reading your blog post I like your first fact about Māui, because you explained what you meant by saying 'Māui was no ordinary man'. Maybe next time you could make your title Arriving in New Zealand a bit bigger. I have never heard of the tale of Māui's Mother, but I have heard of How Māui Slowed the Sun. Have you heard of other Māori stories?

  3. Konichiwa Rosemary,
my name is Cia. I am a Summer Learning Journey blogger who will be working with Ako Hiko bloggers over the summer break.

I’m loving the facts you posted they are detailed and really well written! I like the fact that you mentioned Māui being a mythical figure across a number of polynesian islands. Do you know any particular islands that speak of Māui or someone similar? Perhaps next time you could include some pictures of Māui, I’m sure readers would love to see the legend behind the myths.

In Samoan mythology there is a figure named Ti’iti’i, some of his story sounds awfully similar to Māuis. I thought to myself that maybe Māui is Ti’it’i’s Māori name and vice-versa. Perhaps each island has their own name for him or something similar… What do you think?

You've made an awesome start to the Summer Learning Journey, I can’t wait to read more!

Toe feiloa’i fo’i ('See you again' in Samoan),

    Cia.

  4. Kia Ora Rosemary,

Cadence here from the Summer Learning Journey team!

I love that sentence, “Maui was no ordinary man”. Very intriguing! Full points for you for sharing 3 facts and two other stories you know of that are about Maui.

I loved hearing about all the Maui stories when I was at school. We would use them as inspiration for our own writing, art and even drama sometimes too! My favourite story would be how Maui slowed the sun by catching it with his hook.
He showed great determination, courage and strength!

I can’t wait to read more of your blog posts Rosemary! Keep up the great work.

    Cadence :)
